The Hundred-Foot Journey is an English romantic comedy drama film that tells the story of two chefs, Tess and Remy, who come to America. It stars Helen Mirren, Om Puri and Om Puri. The film was written by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash (who would later go on to write The Descendants) with the script based on the 2004 novel. The Hundred-Foot Journey is set in New York City where this popular restaurant welcomes travelers from around the world every day with its extravagant French fare. When an old rival opens up across the street however, it becomes more difficult for business to stay robust. Burdened with a failing business and a struggling marriage, the two chefs fight to save their restaurant from closing, as well as their marriage from disintegration. The film's casting was announced on December 3, 2016, with Helen Mirren and Om Puri portraying restaurateurs in New York City. The production team began filming in Manhattan and upstate New York in May 2017. It is directed by Lasse Hallström (2017's "The House with a Clock in Its Walls") and written by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash (who would later go on to write "The Descendants"). The film also stars Alfred Molina, Maya Rudolph, Kate McKinnon, Ravi Patel and Russell Hornsby. The film was released on October 19, 2018 by Universal Pictures. The film received positive reviews from critics and grossed over $128 million worldwide against its $27 million budget. A couple of months after World War II ends, the wife (Mirren) of widower Haji (Molina) does not want to return to Paris' haute cuisine kitchen where she was one of the best chefs in France during the war. Instead, she wants to open a small New York City restaurant with her daughter. Meanwhile, Hari Shankar (Puri), the best chef in the world, returned to India after being gone for several years. He is intent on restoring his family's renowned restaurant plan to the country's four great cities of Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad and Kanpur. He hires an ambitious young Indian chef named Ajmer MacGregor (Rudolph) who is eager to be part of the family business. The two quickly get off to a bad start when MacGregor accidentally burns his feet on a hot plate at the restaurant while cooking eggplant. Shankar orders MacGregor to leave and never return. In New York, Haji and his daughter have a hard time finding a location for their restaurant. In fact, the only place they can find is at the entrance of a large French restaurant called Le Saule Pleureur, which offers authentic French cuisine from the Midi region of Southern France. A feud has been going on between the two restaurants for decades. Hari Shankar writes to his brother Shoukat (Patel) in Paris to come help him with a problem he had with a rival chef named MacGregor who destroyed his restaurant.
